TV Mini-Series (2028)The Stateless Diplomat follows Diana Nakayama, a young Japanese woman who unknowingly destroys her late father’s life’s work — a mysterious manuscript he spent decades creating. Determined to uncover its meaning, she embarks on a journey that leads her to Diana Apcar, a forgotten 19th-century Armenian humanitarian and one of the world’s first female diplomats.

Through parallel stories spanning three generations of women, the series intertwines past and present, exploring identity, loss, and legacy. In discovering Apcar’s truth, Diana uncovers her own — revealing a powerful message of hope, resilience, and humanity that transcends time and borders.

🇯🇵 Japan 2026 - We are honored that our project The Stateless Diplomat was officially selected by the Tokyo Film Commission T— a meaningful step forward in bringing this powerful story to life. 🎬✨

Jivan Avetisyan and Producer Adrineh Mirzayan were invited by the Commission to participate in their FAM trip alongside 16 filmmakers from around the world, proudly representing Armenia. 🇦🇲 The trip included extensive location scouting in Tokyo and Yokohama - the city where Diana Apcar once lived and where she now rests. 🕊️

This project has been five years in the making, developed closely with Diana Apcar’s great-granddaughter, Mimi Malayan, and Dr. Meline Mesropyan, who lives in Japan and specializes in the life and work of Diana Apcar — including her research on the Japanese government’s processing of Armenian refugees during WWI.

  • The Story

    Diana Nakayama’s life changes the day her estranged father dies. Unknowingly, she destroys his life's work on a forgotten historical figure, Diana Apcar, before discovering a connection to her own identity. Nakayama travels across continents to piece together the story of Apcar — a woman who, a century earlier in Japan, helped thousands of refugees fleeing the Armenian Genocide of 1915. Through this journey, she attempts to reconstruct her father’s lost manuscript. With each clue, Nakayama uncovers more of the enigmatic woman’s life and how their destinies intertwine across a hundred years.
